About The Speech People

Established in 1999, we are an experienced, creative and energetic group of Speech-Language Pathologists. We love what we do and as a team, have rich collective experience and extensive education in numerous areas of speech and language. Together, we work diligently to provide exceptional quality support and care to each of our valued clients. We are all certified members of Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC) and registered members of the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO).

Meet Our Team

Susan Butler Hinz

M.Sc. (A.), S-LP(C), Reg CASLPO
Sue created The Speech People in 1999 and has worked with children, adolescents and adults with varied speech and language challenges since receiving her Masters of Applied Science in Human Communication Disorders from McGill University way back in 1987.

She has worked for over 30 years in the areas of speech, language, swallowing and voice but her area of special interest is the treatment of stuttering. Sue has extensive education and experience in the Lidcombe program for early stuttering. She is trained in the Camperdown Program for the treatment of stuttering in teenagers and adults. Sue is also Hanen and PROMPT qualified and has amassed significant experience and training in the areas of myofunctional/tongue-thrust, motor speech and voice.

Although Sue is winding down her caseload in preparation for retirement, the team continues to draw upon her vast knowledge and aspires to maintain her legacy of professional excellence at The Speech People.

FUN FACTS about Sue:

She is a Newfoundlander, loves wood-oven pizza, and has too many cookbooks (162!) which she uses to feed her amazing family and friends.

Lisa Roberts Chamberlin

M.Sc.(A.), S-LP(C), Reg CASLPO
Lisa is a 1997 Masters graduate of McGill’s University’s department of Human Communication Sciences and Disorders program and has been practicing speech therapy in Ottawa since then. She joined The Speech People in 2007 after a decade at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario/First Words preschool program and is now proud to be leading the skilled, enthusiastic and devoted team at The Speech People.

Lisa loves working with toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary school-aged children and their families. Her areas of special interest include emerging language, childhood articulation and language, apraxia and autism. Lisa is trained in the Hanen It Takes Two to Talk program, Target Words and the Lidcombe program for stuttering and is dedicated to lifelong learning through continuing education, particularly in the areas of childhood apraxia and autism.

FUN FACTS about Lisa:

Although born and raised in Canada, Lisa spoke with a British accent until she was five years old, thanks to her two British parents.

Pia Herkstroeter

B.A. (Hons), CDA, Reg. CDAAC
Pia graduated from the Communicative Disorders Assistant program at Georgian College and completed her Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in Linguistics at Carleton University. She has experience working with preschool to school-aged clients in articulation, expressive and receptive language, fluency, and literacy, as well as neurodivergent individuals with autism and Down syndrome. Pia also has experience working with adults in areas of speech and language, such as aphasia and apraxia.

Pia is an enthusiastic and determined clinician passionate about helping her clients grow and achieve their speech and language goals. She is dedicated to building strong relationships with her clients and their families, making therapy a fun, safe, and engaging environment.

FUN FACTS about Pia:

Originally born and raised in Germany, Pia has called Ottawa her home for 20 years and is fluent in German and English. When she is not doing speech and language things, you can find her in a local plant store scoping out a new plant to add to her collection or hunting down the best pizza in Ottawa.

Julia Cohen

M.S. S-LP(C) Reg. CASLPO

Julia graduated from Emerson College with a degree in Communication Disorders. She enjoys working in the areas of voice disorders, gender affirming voice, stuttering, accent reduction, and articulation. In addition to working in private practice, she has experience working in medical clinics alongside laryngologists treating voice and upper airway disorders.

A native Montrealer, Julia is on the hunt for the best (Montreal) bagel in Ottawa.

FUN FACTS about Julia:

Julia loves to bake things from scratch, and you can often find her in her kitchen making flatbreads, crackers, and pies.
